GameBlurb’s Thumbs Up/Down – Top 5 Gaming Snacks

Gamers far and wide have their difference: console preference, nationality, gender…there are many things out there that divide us, but we all have something that united us: munchies. Specifically, those foods that we reach for first when entrenched in the heat of gaming battle. The ambrosia that best suits our needs for sustenance, while also allowing us to continue gaming at our peak. So, what are those morsels that you eat most? Check out the list below for my top 5, along with the pros and cons of each!

popcorn 5. Popcorn Pros: Simple to make and even easier to eat, popcorn is a major staple in my gaming diet. The preparation takes the motor skills of a lower primate and can easily be made in between rounds of any multiplayer. Like salty treats? Popcorn. Like sweet treats? Popcorn.
Popcorn Cons: While popcorn is easy to make, leave it in for even 2 seconds longer than you should and you have a black, disgusting mess on your hands. Are you a fan of the ‘extra butter’ popcorn? Kiss the ability to grip a controller and the ultimate resale value of any greasy gaming discs goodbye.

slim-jim 4. Slim Jim Pros: There is a reason that the Macho Man endorsed these bad boys: they are damn delicious. The package is easy enough to get into (I prefer the ‘ripping it open with my teeth’ method) and keeping it in a plastic allows for grease free eating and continued gaming dominance!
Slim Jim Cons: Occasionally the ripping method of opening can get a little tricky, resulting in bloodied gums and heartbreak. Also, have you ever had heartburn with the intensity of 1000 suns after eating too many SJs? Take it from me, it is quite the unpleasant experience.

bagel-bites 3. Bagel Bite Pros: The catchy little jingle doesn’t like…When pizza is on a bagel, you really CAN have pizza anytime! While this is the longest to prepare, it is one of the easiest to eat. The bagel bottom holds no grease, while the delicious pizza-y top can be popped into the mouth with ease. Truly, the pizza and bagel hybrid is what Prometheus meant to bring to humanity from the gods.
Bagel Bites Cons: Depending on the hands of the fates, your first bite will either be like biting into a frozen glacier or sticking your tongue into the molten goo that the Terminator jumps into at the end of T2…there is no proven scientific way to prevent nor predict either from happening.

doritos 2. Doritos Pros: When thinking about munchies, perhaps no other name is more synonymous with being quick and accessible than Doritos. Spanish for “tiny dors”, Doritos are beloved by gamer and stoner alike. With a variety of flavors and the ability to purchase a huge quantity for a low price, Doritos are delicious, cheap, and easy to eat…all great factors to consider when gaming.
Doritos Cons: No matter what variety you purchase, you will end up getting a concrete-like binding on your finger tips. Go ahead and lick it off, that will only gunk up your controller even more. Not being careful with what angle you are putting them in you mouth? Enjoy the cut gums and razor sharp edges wedged between your teeth.

 1. French Fries Pros: If there were a food that could unite the world it peace, it would be the french fry. Beloved by humanity at large, it is internationally known and very rarely deviated in it’s recipe. Easy to purchase, easy to eat, and arguably one of the most delicious foods known to man. Grab a bunch from your favorite fast food restaurant: they always come in a very convenient carrying case!
French Fries Cons: Grease makes the hands slippery, but couple that with a micro-film of salt and you have created a teflon-like like of deliciousness on your fingers. Also, since most people enjoy dipping their fries in ketchup, coordinating hand/eyes between your game and your mouth can really be a messy challenge.

Man, all the talk of these snacks are making me hungry. I feel Doriots and Cheetos are great snacks but will definitely stain your controller a tint of orange. A great, tasty snack that is gaming friendly…Bugles!

For the sake of my controller, and because I like to keep my hands clean, I do not eat any types of food while gaming. If I feel like eating, then I pause the game. I do not resume until I finish and wash my hands. It’s a pretty bad feeling if you ask me. However, this was not always the case. It all started whe-… Okay, yeah, I’m not going to do it like that…

When I was younger, a friend and I use to play lots of Dragonball Z: Budokai on the PS2. We use to play with one of the two following snacks:

    1) Smartfood
    2) Salt and Vinegar Chips

Salt and Vinegar was a snack we had sometimes. Smartfood was the go to snack. It’s fairly messy, though. So you could expect to see it on your controller. But boy, is it one awesome snack! For those who haven’t heard of it, it’s white cheddar popcorn. The packaging is like a bag of chips, as it’s pre-made and doesn’t require a microwave. It’s awesome!

Hey buddy, you don’t have to tell me about Smartfood! I love that stuff! In fact, I have had to stop myself from buying it since I will get the family sized bag and eat it all in one sitting…same for salt and vinegar chips. Damn, I’m starving…
