Capcom Refused To Let Keiji Inafune To Complete Mega Man Legends 3
or those of you who are still upset over Mega Man Legends 3, there seems to be a lot more fuel to add to this fire. Strategies Japan seemed to have dug up some interesting quotes in an interview with 4gamer.net from former Capcom head Keiji Inafune.
So, I told them that I was going to found my own independent company and leave Capcom. However, I stated that I was ready to make a contract with them so that I could keep working on those projects that I started. I couldn’t start making contracts with other publishers for sure if Capcom agreed to the proposition, but I wanted to see those projects that I started to completion. But it couldn’t be done. They answered, ‘We have no need to do that.’
“[I went to the trouble of]…Finding the right time, gathering the team members, planning strategies, all so we could barely start on Mega Man Legends 3. I really don’t want to quit at this crucial moment…but I can’t keep going at Capcom. I am too tired to keep going. I wanted to leave Capcom to recharge my energy, and support Capcom from there, but it seems they don’t allow it. I want to make all my effort to keep Legends 3 alive, but I’m really not sure I can do it.”
Wow. That is just really depressing to hear. Inafune himself wanted to take on the completion of Mega Man Legends 3 and Capcom refused? I really don’t think this is gonna sit too well with the fanbase who will never let Mega Man Legends die, such as our resident illustrator Bay.
Check out his tribute to the game right here.
Thanks to treleus for sending over the tip!

The man who made Capcom the force it is today was disrespected in this manner by a company that, arguably, would probably not exist if not for him? Really classy Capcom. I’m regretting my decision to boycott UMVC3 less and less everyday it seems.

I can understand what you’re meaning. Corporations tend to be everyone’s favorite punching bag and it’s true that Inafune did leave based purely on personal reasons. But considering how Capcom’s been lately I think it’s safe to assume the corporation is to blame. I mean first they make it seem like Megaman Legends 3 was going to be this big user-created game made by the fans, for the fans via their input. Then they cancel it and accuse the fans of stupidity for thinking they had any real input simply by calling the title a non-greenlit prototype. I mean think about that for a second. For some hours of work designing new characters for this game world based on their trust of a company and their own love of a franchise that’s long had a cult following has been completely wasted. All thanks to Capcom’s own actions.
And then there’s Ultimate MVC3, a game that is essentially a dlc package you’re being forced to buy for 40 dollars (at this time, this may go up given Capcom’s recent dealings with the public). It’s almost guaranteed to be incompatible with the first game, despite not really improving on the core system itself, and will be released nearly half a year after the first MVC3. Rather than give fans at least a year or two to justify their 60 dollar purchase purchase they’ve basically said “screw your dumb @#*ses for buying early, now buy our “better” and “more improved” copy or get used to playing single player only as all your friends will have our better @*#@ because we say so”. Hell, they even tried claiming at one point that it was because of the natural disasters that they had to force all their planned downloadable content onto the people who’ve already bought the game for another 60 bucks. Unlike other companies like Sony and Nintendo, who are actually taking a financial hit and have managed to give their loyal customers stuff for free, Capcom has said here that we, the consumers, must cover their losses through the sale of unnecessarily upgraded items that have, effectively, made their most recent titles completely obsolete. Sure, if you can manage to get a decent trade in at most you’ll be getting 20 bucks removed from that and will have to only pay 20 dollars but that’s still 20 bucks you’re giving to a company for selling you the same game you already own loaded with a bunch of stuff you may not even have ever wanted.
And then there’s this little birdie that they’ve flicked to fans indirectly. It’s almost artistic how they’ve managed to do this while insult someone who’s games have litterally influenced an entire generation, if Sonic the Hedgehog’s music has anything to say about it. Some companies may not deserve such ire but Capcom’s surely earned it based on their recent history alone.
Oh, and then there’s what they’re doing with DMC. Sure, that’s not recent, but it still exists.

seth killian already confirmed they’re not compatible in an interview. if people could still use their old copies, it would ruin hard copy sales of the new version as it was with ssf4

Un…freaking…belevable.
I understand that the Legends series is a rather obscure one when it comes to Megaman, but with how passionate the MML and all-around Megaman fanbases are, and with how well Megaman 9 and 10 sold, whynot make a third legends game?
Sure it may be a cult-following niche game series, but niche cult-followed stuff sells like hotcakes these days. So please bring it back Capcom. For the fans.

Wow, just wow.
Its disrespectful things like these that makes it harder for me to be a fan of Capcom as a company.

@Nick:
You’re also forgetting that, for UMvC3, Mega Man X TOPPED the ‘most requested DLC character’ for BOTH JAPAN (according to ShoRyuKen) and HERE (on the Capcom-Unity poll). He even BEAT Venom (#1 Marvel character) in number of votes on the US side.
They claimed no Mega Man incarnation because ‘there wasn’t enough support for him, thus he did not make the cut’.
I believe Classic MM was somwehere around #6 or #7. But hell. Both of them in the top 10, and the person heading the Capcom poll said it best: “One out of three people voting for Mega Man X is A LOT of people.”
But yet, we get a freakin’ racoon.
Go fig.
Yeah, not really regretting my boycot of MvC3 or UMvC3 or.. hell, any Capcom game…. I buy games from the companies I want to support. (Ubisoft and Valve are currently owning my purse between Assassin’s Creed and Portal/HalfLife….) But Capcom? Pfft. Don’t get me wrong; I play the MM games (Just beat MM10 for the first time) but I refuse to give Capcom any more of my money. Not until they get their heads out of their asses and stop taking their hate of all things Keiji Inafune out of the Mega Man fanbase that’s kept them going during some of the more recent years… MM9 and MM10 were not flukes; people just want a good MM game again. Hell, IGN’s top 10 2011 predicted headlines, #10 was the return of Mega Man X! THEY want a new X title!!! If IGN is squawking, it’s not just the MM fanbase; the mainstream folks are noticing there’s a certain group of blue robots missing from our lives and they want him back too….
